SAN DIEGO, Dec. 13 (AP) — A San Diego police officer was shot multiple times during a foot chase early Monday and a suspect was taken into custody after an hour-long standoff, authorities said.

Police Lt. Adam Sharki said the injured officer is in stable condition after surgery at the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

The suspect had been hiding out at a home in a working-class Mountain View neighborhood since 2 a.m. as police pursued and arrested him, Sharki said.

Police evacuated the residents closest to the scene and advised others to shelter in place during the standoff. Several blocks were cordoned off.

The officer on patrol was shot after trying to stop a car that was reported to have been stolen around 12:20 a.m.

The driver led police on a chase for about an hour before the suspect stopped, got out, and fired at the officer, hitting the officer “several times,” Sharki said.

Authorities said the suspect was someone they knew. No other details were provided about the suspect or the injured officer. (Associated Press)
