Canada said the decision followed discussions between Trudeau and the Saudi crown prince on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum summit in Bangkok last November, Al Arabiya reported.
“Punitive trade measures will be removed,” said a government source familiar with the deal but not authorized to speak publicly.
“At the end of the day, an empty chair is not going to move our interests forward or things like human rights forward,” the source added.
“In recent years, we have seen that Saudi Arabia is an important global player,” the government source said. “Saudi Arabia helped to evacuate the Canadians (in Sudan) and they also played an important role in finding a solution to the conflict there,” the source said, according to Al Arabiya.
“We need dialogue with people with whom we don’t always agree on everything in order to find global solutions to global problems,” said Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Jolly.
