LONDON, Sept. 6 (AP) The Scottish leader said Tuesday she will introduce emergency legislation to immediately freeze rents to protect tenants as part of a response to Britain’s cost of living crisis.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said the emergency law would “give people security on roofs this winter by moratoriuming on evictions.” It would also include provisions for tenants in the private and public rental markets Offers measures to freeze rent.

“The Scottish government has no power to stop your energy bills from skyrocketing, but we can and will act to make sure your rent doesn’t go up,” Sturgeon said.

She added that the measure meant rents in Scotland would be frozen from Tuesday until at least March 2023. Nor will rail fares in Scotland rise over the same period, Sturgeon said.

Her statement coincided with Lizzie Truss, who was named Britain’s new prime minister on Tuesday. Truss took office on Tuesday afternoon after winning a leadership contest for the ruling Conservative Party.

Truss, who inherited a struggling economy from her predecessor Boris Johnson, is under pressure to deal with a deepening crisis, largely caused by rising gas and electricity bills. Truss has pledged immediate action to help those whose costs have soared, but has yet to release any details.

Under its decentralized government, Scotland makes some of its own laws, but most matters of fiscal policy are decided by the central government in London. (Associated Press)
