WORLD NEWS | Sharjah Ruler directs restoration of eight rare books in Arabic at Spanish El Escorial library

Sharjah [UAE]4th April (ANI/WAM): Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, member of the Supreme Council and ruler of Sharjah for his significant contribution to the preservation of Arab and Islamic cultural heritage, The Spanish library of eight rare Arabic books has been ordered to be restored at El Escorial.

The restoration project is part of His Highness’s efforts to preserve the global heritage and manuscripts of the El Escorial, especially those related to Arabic and Islamic culture. The initiative continues Sharjah’s efforts to preserve the region’s cultural heritage and underscores His Highness’s commitment to cultural and intellectual exchange on a global scale.

Books planned for restoration include Ibn Arjomand’s Al-Ajrumiyyah, the three Qurans of 1257, 1402 and 1397, Abu Al-Fida’s Summary Book of Human History, Tarikh Al Mukhtasar Fi Akhbar Al Bashar; Al-Asfahani’s collection of poems, Al -Aghani; Al-Milal Wa Al-Nihal; and Kharidat Al-Ajaib Wa Faridat Al-Ghraib.

With this initiative, for the first time in the world, Sharjah is contributing to the preservation of the El Escorial Library’s rare books and manuscripts documenting Arab and Islamic history. His Highness visited the library in 2019, resulting in cooperation between the Emirate and the library in various areas, including the restoration and presentation of rare books in Arabic to interested parties.

The restoration project coincides with the opening of the Sharjah Book Authority’s (SBA) exhibition Escorial Arabic Manuscripts.

Organized in partnership with the El Escorial Library, the event showcases 14 rare manuscripts dating from the 13th to the 16th centuries and runs from April 2nd to 9th. Sharjah was also the first city to host an exhibition featuring the largest collection of rare Arabic artefacts from the El Escorial library outside of Spain. (ANI/WAM)
