[ad_1]

MILAN, Sept. 12 (AP) — Migrants carried at sea by a merchant ship and brought to Italy by the coast guard reported six deaths from thirst during the voyage, the United Nations refugee agency said Monday.

The Italian coastguard said they were transporting 26 migrants, 28 of them, mostly Syrians and Afghans, to the Sicilian port of Pozzallo, where in recent days a Liberian-flagged merchant ship sailed from a Liberian-flagged ship off the coast of Libya. A distressed boat was rescued.

A dehydrated child and his mother were transported by helicopter from a boat to Valletta, the capital of Malta.

Migrants who arrived in Italy told UNHCR officials that six people, including a small child and a 12-year-old child, died of dehydration on board and their bodies were left at sea.

The victims appear to be all Syrians.

So far this year, more than 1,200 people have died or gone missing at sea at dangerous Mediterranean crossings from North Africa to Europe.

The U.N. refugee agency said the route of the boat and how many days it remained at sea were unclear. (Associated Press)
