Langzi [Bhutan], February 12 (ANI): Youth in Bhutan depend on farm income for their livelihoods. In this case, civil society organizations (CSOs) pay them money to maintain their villages, which helps them financially and increases employment opportunities in the area, Bhutan Live reported.

The Youth Development Organization (OYE), part of the Bhutanese Jamchong Thuendrel Foundation (BJTF), is providing funds to local youth to transform their villages. Most of these workers have dropped out of school, and they stay in the village to help their parents with farm work.

The project’s close involvement with the youth of the area benefits the entire village. Tshogpa (representative) Sangay Tenpa of Rangtse Chiwog village in Bhutan said the project has benefited them and maintained the sacred site. “If this project lasts for a period of time, our children can work for it on a regular basis, which will help solve the youth unemployment problem in our village to a certain extent.”

The 20-year-old Senglunzhu, who dropped out of school in 2019 and lost his father at the age of 19, shouldered all the responsibilities of the family and became a part of OYE. Three years ago, the young man had to work in his cardamom field after school. He said that now, in addition to earning income from engineering, he can also learn stone masonry techniques. He and his friends also repaired an ancient road from Langzi Village to Langzi Nai with daily wages.”

The organization not only allows him to make money, but also allows him to participate in social work. The group is currently joined by 22 young people who have completed restoration of another trail between the Hassanz Highway and the pilgrimage site.

Another young man involved in the project, Sangay Tshering, was quoted in the Bhutan Live report as saying: “Since we have this project in our village to work for, we don’t have to go elsewhere to find work. We can spend time with our families, We can even take care of them.”

The project undertaken by the CSO does not end with the maintenance of Haa’s trail. The CSO will build a cafeteria, a hot stone bath facility and a produce sales counter. It also plans to build a homestay near the pilgrimage site. These will be handed over to youth currently working on sustainable development projects.

Nima Gyeltshen, executive director of OYE, said his office had trained participants to record their daily earnings. “There are groups like this in other parts of the country. We will take them on tours to those places and give them a chance to learn how they operate such facilities. (ANI)
