BERLIN, Feb. 17 (AP) — Thousands of flights to and from German airports were canceled Friday as workers went on strike demanding wage increases to curb inflation.

Strikes at seven German airports, including Frankfurt, Munich and Hamburg, affected nearly 300,000 passengers and forced airlines to cancel more than 2,300 flights.

Christine Behle of the Verdi union told public broadcaster RBB-Inforadio that failure to reach a meaningful agreement with employers on pay could lead to “summer chaos” at German airports.

The European Union is seeking a 10.5 percent increase for its members, or at least 500 euros, to make up for last year’s high inflation in Germany and elsewhere as Russia’s attacks on Ukraine had knock-on effects on food and energy around the world.

Verdi chairman Frank Werneke told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung weekly that the willingness of its members to go on strike was high and that future strikes could reach “another level”.

He noted that recent strikes at airports, public transport and childcare facilities could expand to waste removal services and hospitals. (Associated Press)
