Nay Pyi Taw [Myanmar]April 23 (ANI): The vice-chairman of Myanmar’s military-appointed Election Commission was shot dead by rebels in the country’s commercial hub Yangon on Saturday. It was the latest high-profile murder linked to the country’s military ruler, Al Jazeera reported.

Sai Kyaw Thu, deputy director of the coalition’s election commission, was assassinated in the town of Thingangyun, east of Yangon, on Saturday, according to a statement from the army’s media team.

The People’s Defense Forces (PDF), the armed arm of the country’s loosely organized shadowy National Unity Government (NUG), have emerged against the military, which overthrew the government more than two years ago, causing social unrest and an economic crisis, Al Jazeera reported.

The NUG was founded by democratically elected politicians who were ousted in a military coup.

An official has now been targeted in a long history of brutal attacks on civilians by the Burmese military, which has been battling armed ethnic groups for control of territory since shortly after independence in 1948.

Pro-democracy forces have joined forces with some armed ethnic groups to oust the army in a nationwide campaign that has created the most unified resistance the army has faced since the coup. (Arnie)
