SAO PAULO, Feb. 20 (AP) — At least 26 people have been killed by floods and landslides in two cities in northern Sao Paulo state, Brazilian authorities said, and the number could still rise.

On Sunday, the municipality of São Sebastiao confirmed the death of 25 people, and the mayor of Ubatuba said a 7-year-old girl was killed.

The worst-hit cities that are currently in a state of disaster, including Sao Sebastiao, Ubatuba, Ilhabela and Bertioga, canceled their Carnival celebrations as rescue teams struggled to find the missing, injured and suspected dead among the rubble.

“Our rescue teams were unable to reach several locations; it was a chaotic situation,” said San Sebastião Mayor Felipe Augusto. Later, he added that dozens of people were missing in the city and 50 houses collapsed due to landslides.

Augusto posted several videos on his social media channels of the widespread damage in his city, including a baby rescued by locals from a flooded street.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said on Twitter that he would visit the region on Monday.

The São Paulo state government said in a statement that the region had received more than 600 millimeters of rain in a single day, one of the highest in such a short period of time in Brazil.

During that period, Bertioga alone had 687mm, the state government said.

Governor Tarcisio de Freitas said in a statement that he had asked for the support of the military, which has sent two planes and a rescue team to the area.

Television footage showed homes flooded with only the roofs visible. Residents are using small boats to transport goods and people to higher ground. A road linking Rio de Janeiro to the port city of Santos was blocked by landslides and flooding.

The northern coast of the state of São Paulo is a carnival destination frequented by wealthy tourists who prefer to escape the big street parties of the big cities. (Associated Press)
