WORLD NEWS | UK PM Sunak apologizes for not wearing seatbelt in behind-the-car event clip: report

[ad_1]

London [UK]Jan 20 (ANI): British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak apologized on Thursday (local time) after filming a campaign video in the backseat of a moving car with his seat belt removed, Politico reported.

The prime minister’s spokesman said he made an “error of judgement” when he briefly removed his camera for a social media clip during a trip to northern England.

In the clip recorded for Instagram, Sunak spoke to the camera without safety gear as the vehicle he was in continued to drive, Politico reported.

Under UK law, drivers and passengers face fines of up to £500 for not wearing seatbelts while their vehicles are in motion, with some limited exemptions including for emergency services.

Asked if there were any exemptions for Sunak while traveling in a government vehicle, the spokesman told reporters, “It was a mistake and he has apologized.”

A Downing Street spokesman said Sunak, who had previously been fined by police for breaking coronavirus rules, “fully accepts that this was a mistake and apologizes for it.”

“The prime minister believes everyone should wear their seat belts,” the spokesman said, Politico reported.

“It was an error of judgement, he removed it at short notice to film a segment, you’ve seen that, but he admitted it was a mistake.”

The gaffe was seized on by the opposition Labor Party, which sought to slam Sunak over a previous clip showing him struggling to use a contactless debit card, Politico reported.

“Rishi Sunak doesn’t know how to regulate seat belts, his debit card, train services, the economy, this country,” a Labor spokesman said. “The list is growing every day, and it is creating endless pain to watch.” (Arnie)
