TALLINN, April 5 (AP) — The head of the U.N.’s atomic watchdog met with Russian officials in Kaliningrad on Wednesday for talks on the safety of Ukraine’s Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, now controlled by Russian forces.

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, visited the Russian enclave a week after touring the plant, Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.

“I met with senior officials of several Russian agencies in Kaliningrad,” Grossi said on Twitter. “I will continue to work hard to protect the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant,” he said, stressing that it was “in everyone’s interest”.

The head of Rosatom, Alexey Likhachev, was among the officials Grossi met, according to a statement from Rosatom. Likhachev briefed Grossi on “the steps Russia is taking to ensure the safe operation of the ZNPP,” while saying Russia was “ready” to implement Grossi’s initiative.

After Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Kremlin’s troops took over the factory.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has opposed any proposal to legitimize Russian control.

During a visit to the factory last week, Grossi said he was “working hard to prepare and come up with realistic measures that will be approved by all parties.” A potentially catastrophic nuclear accident at a nuclear power plant.
