World News | US agrees to sell Qatar $1 billion in arms during crucial World Cup

[ad_1]

WASHINGTON, Nov. 29 (AP) — The Biden administration on Tuesday approved a $1 billion arms sale to Qatar, a deal announced during halftime of a crucial 2022 World Cup match between Iran and the United States in Doha.

Just as the second half of the US-Iran game began, the US State Department announced that it had signed an agreement for Qatar to purchase 10 defensive drone systems, 200 interceptors and related equipment. Qatar, along with other Gulf Arab states, faces threats from Iran-backed proxies in the region.

In a statement, the department said the arms sale would “support U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives by helping to improve the security of a friendly nation that continues to be an important force for political stability and economic progress in the Middle East.”

It will “enhance Qatar’s ability to counter current and future threats by providing electronic and kinetic defeat capabilities against unmanned aircraft systems. Qatar will have no difficulty in assimilating these items and/or services into its armed forces,” the Department said. (Associated Press)
