WASHINGTON, June 7 (PTI) The United States said on Tuesday it was closely monitoring the situation after an Air India flight bound for San Francisco made an emergency landing in Russia.
Flight AI173 from Delhi on Tuesday was diverted to Magadan, Russia, due to an engine failure, the private airline owned by the Tata group said in a statement last night. The flight, carrying 216 passengers and 16 crew members, landed safely.

“We are aware that a U.S.-bound flight had to make an emergency landing in Russia and will continue to monitor the situation closely. I cannot confirm how many U.S. citizens were on board the plane at this time,” said State Department deputy spokesman Vedante Pak Tell told reporters at his daily news conference.

“It was a flight to the US. So, of course, there could be US citizens on board. Air India has publicly reported that they are sending – what I understand – a replacement aircraft to their destination for passengers to continue their route, but I will defer to the airlines to discuss further on that,” Patel said in response to a question.
