WASHINGTON, Feb. 15 (AP) — Electric car giant Tesla will, for the first time, offer some charging stations to all U.S. electric vehicles by the end of next year, under a new plan announced by the White House on Wednesday.

The White House said the plan would make at least 7,500 chargers in Tesla’s Supercharger and Destination Charger networks available to non-Tesla electric vehicles by the end of 2024.

A plan to open the nation’s largest and most reliable charging network to all drivers could be a game-changer to boost electric vehicle adoption, a key component of President Joe Biden’s climate change goals.

Biden has set a goal of making 50 percent of new U.S. car sales electric by 2030, and he has also pledged to install 500,000 chargers across the country and create a network of fast-charging stations along 53,000 miles of coast-to-coast highways.

“As President Biden has said, the great American road trip will be electrified,” said Mitch Landrieu, a White House aide overseeing implementation of the 2021 infrastructure law that Biden signed.

Soon, electric vehicle charging “will be as easy as filling up at a gas station,” Landrieu told reporters Tuesday.

The plan to open up Tesla’s charging network is one of a series of developments announced by the White House on Wednesday, such as the development of new standards to make the electric vehicle charging network accessible and reliable to all Americans, including those driving long distances.

Landrieu and other officials said the new standard will ensure that everyone has access to the charging network, no matter what car they drive or which state they charge in.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said, “No matter what kind of electric vehicle you drive, we want to make sure you can plug in, know what you’re going to pay, and have a predictable, user-friendly experience Charge.” .

Effective immediately, new standards implemented by the Department of Transportation require EV chargers funded through the Infrastructure Act to be built in the United States.

55% of all component costs must come from the US by July 2024

Automakers warned ahead of the rules that imposing U.S.-made requirements on electric vehicle components could hurt EV growth.

Tesla, GM, EVgo, Pilot, Hertz and others have agreed to use private funding and federal spending from the Infrastructure Act over the next two years to expand their charging networks with thousands of public charging ports, “bringing the nation’s electric The car charging goal is even within reach,” the White House said.

“It’s clear that this administration has made incredible progress in securing the future of electric vehicles,” Landrieu said.

Under the administration’s plan, Tesla would set up charging stations at hotels, restaurants and other public places in both urban and rural areas, the White House said. All EV drivers will be able to access the sites using the Tesla app or website, officials said. Tesla plans to triple its nationwide network of Superchargers over the next few years, the White House said.

The developments come after Landrieu and another top White House aide, John Podesta, met with Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk in Washington last month. The White House said Biden was not present at the meeting, which was focused on the electric vehicle industry and the broader goal of electrifying the U.S. economy.

A week later, the Treasury Department said it was making more electric vehicles — including SUVs made by Tesla, Ford and General Motors — eligible for a tax credit of up to $7,500 under the new vehicle classification definition. The revised standards come after Tesla and other automakers lobbied to change the vehicle definition to allow pricier electric vehicles to qualify for the maximum tax credit.

Tesla raised the price of its Model Y SUV within hours of the Treasury Department’s announcement.

A deal to open up Tesla’s chargers to non-Tesla electric vehicles “could be a very big deal,” said Sam Abuelsamid, principal analyst at Guidehouse Insight.

“If non-Tesla electric car drivers can use the Tesla network, and the network is still as reliable as it is today, then this program should help them a lot,” he said.

The lack of high-quality public chargers on U.S. roads has slowed the growth of EV sales and is often cited by potential buyers as a major barrier to purchasing an EV.

While the White House says the Tesla network should be available by using a company app or website, non-Tesla EVs may require adapters — or even new charger designs, Abuelsamid said.

Gartner analyst Mike Ramsey said the deal with Tesla was important in its own right, but also a sign of relative peace between Musk and the Biden administration. Musk has repeatedly clashed with Biden and other Democrats, and as the new owner of Twitter, Musk has released a series of company messages showing internal debate among Twitter employees over the decision to block stories about the president’s son, Hunter Biden.

“It’s not good for the U.S. government to alienate the best-selling brands of electric vehicles,” Ramsey said in an interview.

He added that the Biden administration “needs Musk’s help to increase the use of electric vehicles in the United States,” and that the new agreement “shows that the administration is working with the world’s most important electric car maker.” (Associated Press)
