Abu Dhabi: While the entire country has been watching fuel price hikes lately, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is leading the way with the launch of the world’s first production-ready long-range solar electric vehicle (EV), the Lightyear 0.
Netherlands-based Lightyear unveiled its latest solar-electric vehicle, the Lightyear 0, at a ceremony at the Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation Park (SRTIP) on Thursday.
The Lightyear 0 car was unveiled by Hussain Al Mahmoudi, CEO of SRTI Park, along with some representatives of Dutch high-tech companies and others from related industries in the UAE.
The company has priced the vehicle as website 250,000 euros (nearly AED 900,000). Interested buyers in the UAE and the region can order vehicles from the company’s website.
In June 2022, the parties signed a preliminary agreement and intend to establish a university research exchange program on solar electric vehicles (EVs) and to promote policy initiatives that promote government incentives for electric vehicles, including solar-powered extended EVs.
Lightyear 0 vehicles will arrive in Sharjah in early 2023.
According to media reports, the car is twice as efficient as a comparable Tesla Model S, using only 1,500 kWh per year.
The Lightyear 0 is production-ready and can run for months in the summer before it needs to be plugged into a universal charger or household outlet. It has a top speed of 160 kilometers per hour and accelerates from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in just 10 seconds.
Hussain Al Mahmoudi, CEO of STRI Park, said the UAE, the world’s third largest producer of solar energy, was an ideal place to test Lightyear’s patented solar technology.
