Kyiv’s relationship with Germany, which is heavily dependent on Russia for energy supplies and Europe’s largest economy, has been a particularly sensitive issue.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky fired Kyiv’s ambassador to Germany on Saturday, along with several other senior foreign envoys, the Ukrainian presidential website said.

In a decree that did not specify the move, he announced the dismissal of Ukraine’s ambassadors to Germany, India, the Czech Republic, Norway and Hungary.

It is unclear whether the envoys will get new jobs.

Zelensky urged his diplomats to secure international support and military aid for Ukraine as it tries to fend off a Feb. 24 Russian invasion.

Kyiv’s relationship with Germany, which is heavily dependent on Russia for energy supplies and Europe’s largest economy, has been a particularly sensitive issue.

The two capitals are currently at odds over a German-made turbine undergoing repairs in Canada. Germany wants Ottawa to return turbines to Russian gas giant Gazprom to deliver gas to Europe.

Kyiv has urged Canada to keep the turbines, saying sending them to Russia would violate sanctions imposed on Moscow.
