Food delivery company Zomato said on Monday it will stop food ordering services for customers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The development comes months after Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal told CNBC TV18 on July 12 that the company would only focus on its operations in India. International business no longer fits in their roadmap, he added. Zomato exited all international markets as a food delivery company in November 2021 following its decision to exit Lebanon. As the company said in its regulatory filing, customers trying to order food on the Zomato app in the UAE will be redirected to Talabat from November 24.
Zomato sold its UAE-based food delivery business to Talabat in 2019. According to Zomato, the termination will not have any material impact on the company’s operations and finances. It further added that it will continue to offer dining out and restaurant discovery services in the UAE.
Zomato entered the UAE market in 2012. It eventually sold its food delivery business to the UAE’s Delivery Hero Group in 2019 for nearly $172 million. Delivery Hero Group has entered into an agreement with Zomato Media to purchase its business, Talabat Middle East Internet Services LLC, through Delivery Hero’s wholly-owned subsidiary.
Zomato’s revenue for the quarter:
The company also ended its Pro and Pro Plus memberships, and now it’s working on a new loyalty program for food delivery. Its revenue from Zomato Pro fell sharply to Rs 9 lakh.
Zomato posted a net loss of 2.51 billion rupees in the quarter ended September 30, compared with 4.3 billion rupees a year ago. Operating income rose 62 per cent to Rs 16.61 crore from Rs 10.24 crore.
In the latest development, Rahul Ganjoo, Zomato’s new program head and former head of food delivery, has resigned from the company. He left the company after five years with the company. Ganjoo previously held product management roles at companies such as Twitter, Snapdeal and Symantec. This follows the resignation of Zomato’s Intercity Legends head Siddhart Jhawar from the company on November 7.
