on your bike

Chic boutique fitness establishment CRANK Abu Dhabi recently opened its doors at Sheikha Fatima Park and has been putting the city’s gym-goers through their black-light pace from jumping on. The brand offers 45-minute high-intensity cycling workouts, allowing riders to burn those calories on intense sprints and endurance climbs, all under the glow of a unique Midnight Bash “Artistic Lighting” aesthetic designed just for the studio combustion. And, importantly, the soundtrack slaps on. CRANK runs an innovative ride ranking system (if the idea scares you, you’re free to opt out) – it assigns points based on your pedal power and torque settings, and then puts you at the top of the leaderboard. In Dubai, they offer Shape and Stretch classes, which doesn’t seem to be available in Abu Dhabi yet – keep your fingers crossed for the future. Pro tip: They offer discounted trial periods for new riders, but be careful, once you start, there’s no going back.

Sheikha Fatima Park, from 8.30am to 7.30pm, trial prices start from Dhs60. Tel: (04) 321 2095, @crank.uae

Punjabi BBQ

Now, the Michelin Guide has endorsed the Indian restaurant, bringing a plethora of cuisines to the table — quite a few of which are cruelty-free. You’ll find clear indications throughout the menu as to which dishes are suitable for vegetarians and which dishes can be adjusted so that they are prepared to be suitable for vegetarians. This shows a lot of thought and care, and the bonus is that this is also one of the best high end South Asian restaurants in Abu Dhabi. We are big fans of the vegetable mixed grill (Dhs100), the chaat option and the bhagara baingan (Dhs75). As an extra plant-based boost in January, they’re offering a full, limited-edition vegan menu.

Did not enjoy another brunch

We don’t know how or why it happened, but Abu Dhabi seems to be experiencing a golden age of jazz at the moment, and we’re here for it. The latest cat to drop a pin in this groove is – Acres Grill, at Yas Acres Golf and Country Club, as part of their brand new Saturday Brunch offering. Like the fragmented rhythms of jazz beats, they do things a little differently – their packages are tiered, giving you the freedom to only pay for what you want to eat and drink. On double bass, there’s a choice of unlimited appetizers and salads for AED 99. On the key side, there are à la carte main courses starting at Dhs110. Trumpets – Free drink package for only Dhs149. On the microphone, for your entertainment, the soothing sounds of a live jazz band. OK.

circuit training

Judging by the way some of you treat the motorways here, it’s unlikely you’ll get a shock phone call ahead of next year’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. But there’s still a way you can find yourself doing a few laps at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina Circuit. They have a ton of cars to experience, but the best for thrill seekers has to be Formula Yas 3000 (Dhs1,840). Described as “the closest thing to an F1 car that most people will ever drive”, you’ll be looking around in a car with a 3.0-litre V6 Jaguar Cosworth engine and Formula 1 paddle shifters. Look for the less fast-paced thing? Yas Marina also offers karting lessons (from Dhs120). www.yasmarinacircuit.com

ingrained

The UAE’s desert regions hold many wonders, but few match them Fossil Dunes of Al Wathba. These naturally occurring monoliths are prominent, jagged boulders forged over the past 120,000 years, a reminder of the emirate’s storied geological history. Not far from the Al Wathba Wildlife Sanctuary (also well worth a visit), this vast area covers more than 1,700 fossilized sand dunes and has been designated a protected landmark. The Al Wathba Fossil Dunes Reserve now houses a visitor centre, a viewing area, an amphitheater and 7 kilometers of hiking trails with educational signage explaining the origin and cultural significance of these magnificent sandstone remains.

prison Break

Drawing inspiration from iconic TV shows, Crystal Maze with fort boyard, Prison Island – Beat the Bars is a brand new adventure experience, now open at Abu Dhabi Mall. Spanning 1,000 square meters, this isn’t an escape room – it’s a network of 26 individual “units”, each tasked with a harder (shh, that’s a word) task than the last, and if you have to beat them If you want to escape from the island, you have the bragging capital of the winner.
