to celebrate muslim women’s day On March 27, we’ll look back at 10 landmark moments in pop culture involving the hijab. Keep scrolling to read them in chronological order.
1.The first Muslim woman to accept an Academy Award wears a hijab (March 2014). University of Screen Arts and Culture Student Zaineb Abdul-Nabi was one of six students to win the “Team Oscar” competition for a short film about her planned contribution to the film industry.
2. Dolce & Gabbana presents a line of embellished headscarves (January 2016). A year ago, Dolce & Gabbana announced plans to produce a line of hijabs and abayas for Muslim clients in the Middle East, called The Abaya Collection: The Allure of the Middle East. It debuts at Style.com/Arabia in August.
3. H&M showcases hijab in its ‘Closed Loop’ campaign (August 2016). For the first time ever, the fast-fashion retailer featured a Muslim model, 23-year-old Mariah Idrissi, wearing a hijab in a video asking customers to recycle their clothes.
4. In 2016, the first American to wear a hijab at the Olympics did so. Ibtihaj Muhammad was the first member of Team USA to wear a hood in saber fencing. She would go on to win a bronze medal.
5. Anniesa Hasibuan presents her designs at New York Fashion Week (September 2016). During New York Fashion Week last September, Indonesian designer Hasibuan showed her collection wearing a head-to-toe hijab, the first Muslim designer to do so. She also presented a collection at New York Fashion Week in February.
6. A Minnesota teen competes in a beauty pageant (November 2016). Before Halima Aden hit Kanye West’s fall 2017 show, she was the first-ever contestant to wear a hijab and burkini at the Miss Minnesota pageant.
7. Huda Quhshi opened the first women-only hijab salon (January 2017). Beauty specialist Huda Quhshi has opened Le’Jemalik, a hijab-friendly salon in Brooklyn, New York, that offers hair services, waxing, facials, manicures, pedicures, manicures and halal manicures, and brow trimming. “I once decided to go to a salon and when a guy walked in, I had to put a hijab over my wet hair and run to the back room,” she told teen fashion The reason why she decided to open a women-only salon. “After that experience, I thought, ‘You know what?
