11 Groundbreaking Pop Culture Hijab Moments

4. In 2016, the first American to wear a hijab at the Olympics did so. Ibtihaj Muhammad was the first member of Team USA to wear a hood in saber fencing. She would go on to win a bronze medal.

5. Anniesa Hasibuan presents her designs at New York Fashion Week (September 2016). 6. A Minnesota teen competes in a beauty pageant (November 2016). Before Halima Aden hit Kanye West’s fall 2017 show, she was the first-ever contestant to wear a hijab and burkini at the Miss Minnesota pageant.

7. Huda Quhshi opened the first women-only hijab salon (January 2017).
