What do 11 year olds usually do to beat boredom? For young South Korean Grace Joo-eun Choi, the pursuit of an exciting and lucrative career opened her doors to art, baking and travel before the 11-year-old decided to feature in her first book, The Way to drop it all Out Of Boredom: Italy, published by Austin MacAuley at Publishing City, Sharjah.

The young author, artist and baker enjoyed a celebrity moment at the recently concluded Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival (SCRF 2023), where she shared how she started writing while in Italy with her family during the global pandemic , where at the time her father was a career diplomat.

The talented Choi also self-illustrates her 40-page book, which includes spunky characters like protagonist Fluff Ball. Explaining how the role and her adventures mirrored Grace’s own, she said: “Fluffball traveled everywhere I went; she traveled to 10 different cities in this beautiful European country, visiting every All the iconic sights of the city.”

“I never think much about my travels. In fact, I used to get bored with some of the short trips I took with my family. But after COVID-19, I realized the importance of getting out and want other kids my age to pass To develop the same appreciation by reading my experiences in this book,” she added, excited to reveal that the sequel will be based on her travels across the United States. Grace is looking forward to her years in the UAE, where her father, Choi Young-joon, has been appointed Deputy Consul General in Dubai. “I love the shopping malls, ice rinks and other adventures here,” comments the upbeat young writer whose mother publishes original works in Korean covering art and cooking.

When asked if she followed a definite method or writing process, Choi explained: “I don’t have a method when I write. Whenever I have an idea, I jot it down. Then usually within six months my The first draft is ready. My mother helps me with the design process and final revisions before my work is entrusted to a publisher.”
