At least 15 people have been killed in a mass shooting at a bar in the Johannesburg town of Soweto.

Police said they were investigating reports that a group of men arrived at the bar in a taxi shortly after midnight on Sunday and opened fire on those inside.

Three people were seriously injured and they were treated in hospital along with another victim who suffered less injuries.

Gauteng police chief Elias Mawela said the number of cartridges found at the scene indicated a group of people had been firing.

He added: “Initial investigations suggest these people are having a good time here, in a licensed bistro that is open at the right time.

“Suddenly they heard some gunshots and that was when people were trying to run out of the bistro. We don’t have a complete picture of what the motive was and why they were targeting these people.

“You can see that a large-caliber firearm was used and it was a random shot. You could see those people everyone was struggling to get out of the pub.”

Mr Mawela added that the area where the shooting took place was so dark it was difficult to find someone who could identify the suspect.

National police spokesman Dimakatso Sello said rifles and 9mm pistols were used in the attack.

In another incident, four people were shot dead by unidentified gunmen in a bar in the coastal town of Sweetwater, in the coastal city of Pietermaritzburg, Saturday night.

According to police, two men entered the bistro and opened fire at random on customers.

Two died at the scene and two others later died in hospital.

Eight other people injured in the incident are being treated in hospital.

The shooting comes two weeks after 21 teenagers were found dead in an east London pub.

Authorities have not announced the cause of the deaths, but the young men were not shot or crushed to death in the stampede, according to officials.
