2023 United Arab Emirates derby at a glance

[ad_1]

Dubai route to Kentucky Derby at Woodford Preserve Not a fruitful one in its history. From 18 starters, the best Kentucky Derby finish for a runner from the United Arab Emirates Derby was fifth in 2011 for the Master of Hounds.

However, the $1 million race at the Meydan has produced talented runners over the years, such as 2018 Dubai World Cup winner Thunder Snow and 2022 Longines Breeders Cup Turf Race winner rebel romance. Maybe shipping from the Middle East to central Kentucky is a little too much work for a 3-year-old to reach the top of his career on the first Saturday in May, but it’s still a staple of America’s Triple Crown race. International competition.

The 2023 UAE Derby, sponsored by Atlantis The Royal, featured a close race of 13 participants, including several notable Japanese and American runners as well as top contenders from the mighty Irish Coach Barn Aidan O’Brien.

PLEASE NOTE: Numbers shown are saddle cloth (post location in parentheses).

1.(7) is unique: The need for a fourth-place finish in the Saudi Derby held by Boutique Group is a factor here. The 2022 three-game winning streak comes in rushing, but he’s never had a bad run in seven games, and the price should be right.

trainer: Antonio Sintra; jockey: Joao Moreira

twenty four) oh my god: After racing exclusively on turf and picking up a handful of victories in his first six races in the US, the Mendelssohn colt took a big step forward as he made his first move to the main track in Dubai. He won the conditional match at Meydan on 24 February with 7 furlongs by 2 ¼ length, beating eight opponents. Top American rider Tyler Gaffalione rode an interesting underdog.

trainer: Doug O’Neill; jockey: Tyler Gafarione

3. (5) Cairo: His two-race win at the Patton Stakes on the Dundalk Synthetic Main Track on March 3 earned him 20 points and a spot at the Kentucky Derby. He is the team winner on Irish grass with elite coach Aidan O’Brien and has never finished lower than second in five starts. It would be intimidating if he could handle turning to the dirt, but it’s a major hurdle.

trainer: Aidan O’Brien; jockey: Ryan Moore

4. (12) Continue: He finished fifth in the Saudi Derby held by Boutique Group after winning two of his three matches in Japan. Big race days in recent years have taught racing fans to respect the Japanese shipper’s chances, but other Japanese players look more promising in this position.

trainer: Yoshito Yahagi; jockey: Sakai Ryuu

5. (1) Derma Sotogake: The Mind Your Biscuits colt won three straight in Japan from 1 mile to 1 1/8 miles, including a stakes win that earned him 20 Kentucky Derby qualifying points before being shipped to the Middle East and 3rd Place Derby by Boutique Group at the Saudi Arabian Circuit. It’s worth a look.

trainer: There is no filial piety in the sound; jockey: Christophe Lemaire

6. (8) Dural heirs: He had his only previous win on a dirt track in Japan and entered this event with an incredible upset at the Group 1 Hopeful Stakes in Nakayama on Dec. 28. A classy 3-year-old, but it’s hard to gauge the quality of the race from his only dirt win and the fact that Dura Erede hasn’t raced since Hope.

trainer: Chi Tianxue; jockey: Christian DeMuro

7. (2) To the soldiers: A streak of about 1.5 miles on the main track in Meydan, most recently winning the Al Bastakiya race sponsored by Arabian Adventures, ahead of UAE Derby competitor Mr Raj. Showed significant improvement recently and should not be dismissed.

trainer: Faz Nass; jockey: Adrian de Vries

8. (13) Qianglaizi: After a 3.5-month hiatus in the 1 mile Hyacinth Stakes in Tokyo, he finished fifth after winning the Open Championship in the 1 1/8 mile race in his native Japan. The extra distance could improve his chances, and he should improve on his second start off the field, but the perimeter doesn’t do him any favors.

trainer: Koichi Shintani; jockey: Kawata Yuga

9. (9) Lakhresh: In his 3-year-old debut, he impressed when he won about 1 1/8 miles of conditional race on this main course in 4 ½ lengths, but was beaten by Go Soldier Go in Al Bastakiya At 6 ¾ length, he took a step back sponsored by Arabian Adventures. Eligible to consider rebounding efforts, but not sure if he’s quick enough.

trainer: Musabbeh Al Mheiri; jockey: michael bazarona

10. (6) Mr Raj: On March 4, he finished third in the UAE 2,000 Guineas hosted by Nakheel, then tied for second with UAE derby competitor Go Soldier Go in the Al Bastakiya race sponsored by Arabian Expeditions. He’s been at the top of his game lately, and a repeat effort will make him a top-three threat.

trainer: Ahmed bin Hamash; jockey: ray dawson

11. (3) Perrier: The Hyacinth Stakes winner won three of four career races and finished third in the Kentucky Derby Points Zennippon Nisai Yushun, his only loss. Distance is an issue for Perriere, but he closes powerfully in Hyacinth and has been very consistent. A victorious contender.

trainer: Yoichi Kuroiwa; jockey: Orsin Murphy

12. (10) tall boy: Trainer Doug O’Neill has two top-three finishes in four races in the US.He ranked fourth in his second grade Los Alamitos Future But was shipped to Dubai at the age of 3 and scored a breakthrough victory in the UAE 2,000 Guineas in Nakheel. If he can replicate the UAE’s two thousand guineas effort, Tall Boy is a player to receive the highest honor.

trainer: Doug O’Neill; jockey: william buick

13. (11) Worcester: While he’s yet to win in three fights, Worcester could be one of Hall of Famer Bob Baffert’s betting favorites after finishing third in Class 3 , beat by two lengths Robert B. Lewis Wager February 4th Santa Anita Park. Lewis was a big race in his first attempt of about two laps and he was the pick for that race.
