24 UAE players declared for inaugural tournament

DUBAI – With just over a month to go since the first ‘Smartball’ was pitched, the first bat roared with glory at the Dubai International Stadium and today, the International League T20 along with its six franchises – Abu Dhabi Knights Cavaliers, Desert Vipers, Dubai Capitals, Gulf Giants, MI Emirates and Sharjah Warriors – have announced to the cricketing world the UAE players who will start the inaugural ILT20 on Friday 13th January.

The announcement also identified the final teams entering the league’s inaugural tournament.

With 24 coveted slots, four players per team, and at least two (players) to feature in the starting line-up for each game, the much-anticipated announcement marks a milestone in UAE cricket history. An incredible moment and a bright future for the pioneering quasi-nationals in their player development journey.

Having players from the UAE compete in a world-class championship in an ICC-sanctioned event, the player’s membership is certainly a huge boost for Associate Cricket.

Emirates Cricket General Secretary Mubashshir Usmani said: “Today is a very meaningful day. We continue to reiterate that the core of the league is built on the foundations of UAE cricket and the development of UAE players.

“With the support and commitment of our franchise to now be able to share with the world of cricket what we have achieved in this mission, 24 of the best Emirati talent have been acquired (by the franchise), it is a Incredible UAE cricket and board day.

“We’re delighted that the performance and development teams have identified some up-and-coming uncapped players from a very deep supply pool, in addition to some capped players.”

The inaugural ILT20, which has been approved by the ICC for several years, will debut in January 2023 and will be played at exemplary world-class cricketing facilities in the UAE in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.

Franchise teams, consisting of 84 international players and 24 Emirati players, including Abu Dhabi Knight Riders (Kolkata Knight Riders), Desert Vipers (Lancer Capital), Dubai Capitals (GMR), Gulf Giants (Adani Sportsline ), MI UAE (Reliance Industries) and Sharjah Warriors (Capri Global).
