[ad_1]

Some 28 companies in the UAE’s industrial sector have pledged to implement targets for reducing carbon emissions ahead of the UAE’s hosting of the COP28 conference in November and December 2023.

The companies are part of the National Dialogue on Climate Ambition initiative, the sixth cohort to join the Climate Responsible Companies Pledge initiative, bringing the total number of companies that have signed the pledge to 90, from across the country’s sectors.

The tenth National Climate Ambition Dialogue was launched by Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, who reaffirmed the UAE’s desire to meet its global climate commitments by achieving climate neutrality by 2050. She also noted that all partners in the country need to cooperate to make this happen. She expressed delight at the pledge by the largest industrial company in the UAE to reduce carbon emissions ahead of this year’s Conference of the Parties (COP28).

practical solution

She said: “The industrial sector is responsible for the majority of the UAE’s and the world’s carbon emissions and we now need to work hard to find practical solutions to reduce these emissions. We believe that with the cooperation of all partners and their Commitment, we will be better equipped to achieve all of our shared goals, address climate change, and create a more sustainable future for us and for generations to come.”

Almheiri added: “The UAE sees an urgent need to work towards limiting the rise in global temperatures to well below 1.5°C to avoid the consequences of climate change and its impact on human life. As such, the UAE is the first country in the Middle East to sign the Paris Climate Agreement and make nationally determined contributions to reducing carbon emissions. With the support of our wise leadership, we are working through the National Climate Ambition Dialogue and other initiatives to engage all stakeholders to achieve our climate goals and climate neutrality by 2050 Year.”

Organized by the Ministry in partnership with Emirates Steel Arkan, the event was themed “Accelerating the transition to a low-carbon green industry”.

The dialogue, the tenth in its series, focuses specifically on the industrial sector and aims to reduce industrial carbon emissions in the UAE. This is particularly timely as the UAE prepares to welcome the international climate community to the Conference of the Parties (COP28) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change later this year.

sectoral climate action

Aligned with the Year of Sustainable Development, the event aims to boost the country’s sectoral climate ambitions. It aims to support the UAE’s strategic initiative to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 and strengthen its commitment to international climate action agreements, in particular the Paris Climate Agreement. Additionally, the event aims to foster collaboration among strategic partners, government entities and private organizations to achieve these goals.

Signatories of the Commitment, we are proud to advance our industry’s decarbonization efforts at a scale that supports the country’s strategic move to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.”

He added: “By actively reducing our environmental impact and aligning with the country’s ambitious goals for a greener tomorrow, we leverage innovation across our products, programs and operations, while working with our stakeholders to Make a greater impact on the carbon footprint of the industrial sector, accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy and seize new business opportunities.”
