Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: Nearly 300 riders gathered for the inaugural New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) annual Falcon Ride to promote cycling as a healthy and sustainable form of transportation. A community ride open to participants of all levels takes place on Al Hudayriat Island. Riders enjoyed views of the Abu Dhabi skyline, fresh air and the great outdoors as they completed the 11km cycle loop, with some participants choosing to run an extra lap. Registered riders will receive a free Annual Falcon Ride jersey, sunglasses and a participation medal.
The annual falcon tour contributes to the larger national vision to promote an active lifestyle. Cycling is an increasingly popular form of exercise and transportation in the UAE, especially in Abu Dhabi. The emirate was named a Cycling City by the International Cycling Union (UCI) in 2021, becoming the first city in the Middle East and Asia to receive such status.The UAE has launched several initiatives to further support this, including Abu Dhabi 360 and bike abu dhabiwhich aims to lead the emirate’s long-term cycling goals and promote the links between three key elements of cycling development: mobility, health and leisure, and sport.
Cycling events are part of the university’s wider community events, such as NYUAD’s upcoming Open Campus Day On March 18th, NYUAD’s campus will be filled with music, food stands, events and performances. Throughout the day, visitors can tour learning spaces and recreational facilities, listen to talks by NYU’s world-renowned faculty, and participate in interactive research stations on topics ranging from neuroscience and audio production to human-centered design and campus life.
