Emirates Water and Electricity Company (Ewec) has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to qualified developers and consortia of developers interested in developing a new reverse osmosis independent water project (IWP) in the Abu Dhabi archipelago.
The Abu Dhabi Archipelago reverse osmosis desalination project consists of two independent greenfield low-carbon intensive reverse osmosis desalination plants located on Saadiyat Island and Al Huderiyat Island.
Together, the two plants will provide 100 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD), equivalent to 455,000 cubic meters of potable water per day, Ewec’s statement said.
The RFP is being issued to bidders who have passed the qualification process following the Expression of Interest (EOI) phase that took place last September.
A total of 41 companies and consortia submitted expressions of interest (EOIs), of which 19 companies and consortia have qualified for the RFP stage. The deadline for submitting the RFP is set for the fourth quarter of 2023.
The scope of the project includes the development, financing, construction, operation, maintenance and ownership of the plant and associated infrastructure.
The successful developer or consortium of developers will own up to 40 percent of the entity, while the remaining stake will be indirectly held by the Abu Dhabi government, it added.

“Once complete, the Abu Dhabi Archipelago RO project will be our seventh and eighth RO plants, allowing us to significantly transform our fleet into a water production portfolio, actively contributing to the decarbonization of the industry, supporting UAE Water Security Strategy 2036, UAE Energy ‘Strategy 2050’ and UAE Net Zero Emissions Strategy Initiative goals by 2050. We look forward to receiving competitive bids from qualified companies as the project development progresses. ’ he added.
According to Ewec, the low-carbon intensive RO desalination project will also work with Modon and Aldar Properties to develop and implement a unique design covering two desalination plants that will integrate with the island’s unique nature and ecosystem.
The design of the two plants will also enhance the architectural visuals, reflecting the sustainable reverse osmosis technology model used in the reverse osmosis project in the Abu Dhabi archipelago.– trade arab news agency
