Nawaz Sharif can run in elections: Pakistan’s law minister disqualified World News

[ad_1]

Pakistan’s Law Minister Azam Nazir Talal said the lifetime disqualification of Pakistan Muslim League supreme leader Nawaz Sharif has ended and he is now eligible to stand in elections. He further stated that under the current political situation, it cannot be ruled that the National Assembly of Pakistan should be dissolved before its term. After his term ends, a caretaker will be installed, he said.

Nawaz Sharif will no longer face lifetime disqualification as the maximum disqualification period is five years, the minister said.

“If anyone thinks that one person is the beneficiary of these amendments, tomorrow it will be another. Legislating and amending laws is the constitutional jurisdiction of Parliament. Legislative work cannot be carried out by any body other than Parliament,” he said .

He went on to say that no decision could be taken without consultation with coalition partners in the government.

Earlier, Pakistan’s National Assembly passed legislation to limit how long MPs can be disqualified from office. Nawaz Sharif served as Pakistan’s prime minister three times after he was ousted in 2017 over corruption allegations. He was subsequently banned from politics for life by the country’s highest court. He was later sentenced to seven years in prison.

Nawaz Sharif was released on medical bail in 2019, after which he flew to the UK, where he has since remained to lead his party. His brother Sheikh Baz Sharif became prime minister last year.

“The ruling Muslim League and its coalition partners want Nawaz Sharif back,” political analyst Hassan Askari told AFP earlier. He explained, “The bill has been passed to achieve this.” Goal. Nawaz Sharif will be the main contender for the Muslim League-Sharif faction in the next elections. His return will be very helpful for party politics, but it is unclear whether he himself will run.”
