Nepal forms 4-member committee to probe Mount Everest helicopter crash

In response to the tragic helicopter crash near Mount Everest in eastern Nepal, the Nepalese government has taken the initiative to establish a committee dedicated to investigating the incident. The crash resulted in the loss of all six individuals who were onboard, including five members of a Mexican family. The helicopter involved in the accident was a Manang Air 9N-AMV.

Heading the inquiry committee is Budhisagar Lamichhane, a joint secretary from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Civil Aviation. This four-member team has been entrusted with the responsibility of conducting a thorough investigation into the incident. The ill-fated helicopter was end route from Sork Airport in Sol Khumbu district to Kathmandu when it tragically crashed in the Rancour area of Laukik Rural Municipality.

During a meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office, the Council of Ministers expressed deep condolences for the lives lost in the crash. Consequently, they made the decision to form the committee in order to delve into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Information Minister and Government Spokesperson Rekha Sharma highlighted, “The helicopter piloted by the Nepali pilot carrying the Mexican citizens had an accident. The Council of Ministers expresses its heartfelt condolences to all those who died in the accident and established a commission of inquiry.”

Nepal faces risks from challenging weather and terrain, leading to multiple aviation accidents. The investigation committee aims to improve safety measures and prevent future tragedies.

The government’s swift response in establishing this committee underscores their commitment to thoroughly investigate the incident and provide answers to the affected families and the wider public. It is an important step towards ensuring transparency, accountability, and ultimately, the safety of air travel in Nepal.
