China: Typhoon Doksuri’s Floods Claim Fourteen Lives

Weekend Tragedy in China: Typhoon Doksuri‘s Floods Claim Fourteen Lives in Shulan Over the past weekend, the city of Shulan in northeastern Jilin province, China, witnessed a devastating toll of fourteen lives lost due to flooding caused by Typhoon Doksuri.

The typhoon’s impact has been felt not only in Shulan but also in other regions, including Northeastern China, Beijing, and Hebei province, which have been grappling with heavy rainfall and floods since the typhoons’ landfall in southern Fujian province two weeks ago.

Adding to the gravity of the situation, more than twenty people lost their lives last week in Beijing and Hebei, making it difficult to ascertain the overall death toll for the entire country as authorities are yet to release the comprehensive figures.

Among the casualties in Shulan were three officials, including a vice mayor of the city, which is home to approximately 587,000 people, as reported by state media on Sunday.

However, there is a glimmer of hope amidst the tragedy as water levels in Shulan have receded to safer levels, allowing emergency response efforts to focus on relocating affected residents and repairing damaged infrastructure.

Power has been successfully restored to 14,305 homes in the region, providing some relief to the affected communities.

Despite these efforts, challenges persist as sections of the Songhua River, the main river in northeastern China, and the Nenjiang tributary continue to be dangerously high, warranting continuous vigilance and preparedness.

In addition to Shulan, efforts to restore power are underway in flood-hit areas of Beijing and Hebei province. Reports indicate progress in resuming power in the northeastern provinces of Jilin, Heilongjiang, and Liaoning, though work remains ongoing to fully reinstate essential services and aid those impacted by the devastating floods.

State broadcaster CCTV is actively keeping the public updated on the restoration efforts.

The nation stands united in grief, and authorities are working diligently to provide aid, support, and relief to the affected communities while also striving to prevent further loss of life and damage to infrastructure in the face of this natural disaster.
