The UAE welcomes the UN’s announcement of the successful oil unloading operation from the deteriorating FSO Safer tanker near Yemen’s Red Sea coast.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) commends the United Nations, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen, and donor nations for supporting the operation that averted an environmental and humanitarian crisis.
The UN confirmed removing over 1 million barrels of oil from the decaying supertanker, preventing a potential disaster.
Earlier warnings highlighted the risk to the Red Sea coastline, with the aging Safer tanker posing a rupture or explosion threat akin to the 1989 Exxon Valdez incident.
