Sheikh Mohammed orders an air bridge for humanitarian relief to Libya

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE’s Vice President, Prime Minister, and Dubai’s Ruler, directs airlifts to assist the International Humanitarian City (IHC) in delivering relief aid to help those impacted by the severe flooding in eastern Libya.

Mohammed Ibrahim Al Shaibani, Chairman of Dubai’s International Humanitarian City, expressed, “Our hearts go out to the people of Libya during this tragic time. Dubai’s International Humanitarian City remains committed to extending aid to those impacted, and we are prepared, alongside our partners, to ease their hardship.

This marks the third emergency response mission by the IHC in 2023, addressing unforeseen crises in the Middle East and North Africa.”IHC sent a second aircraft to Benghazi, Libya, on Tuesday, carrying around 100 tons of shelter, food, and telecommunication supplies from the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the United Nations Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD) of the World Food Programme, and the Fast IT and Telecommunications Emergency and Support Team (FITTEST).

Khaled Khalifa, Senior Advisor and UNHCR’s Representative to the GCC countries, commended the UAE’s exemplary humanitarian efforts, setting a standard for supporting humanitarian and aid organizations in their response to regional and global emergencies. He specifically acknowledged the significant role played by Dubai’s global stockpiles.

He stated, “The humanitarian crisis in Libya is of dire proportions. The recent storm and flooding have resulted in widespread devastation, loss of lives, and displacement of thousands of people. Many have lost their homes and belongings, leaving them in desperate need of immediate assistance.

“He added, “IHC’s generous support enables UNHCR to sustain its commitment to the ongoing relief operations and ensure the timely delivery of essential supplies to the areas and individuals hardest hit by the floods in Libya.”In response to the crisis, IHC swiftly activated its Global Humanitarian Impact Fund, orchestrating a humanitarian relief airbridge to aid those suffering from the catastrophic consequences of Storm Daniel.
