A weightlifting tragedy occurred as a 61-year-old veteran lifter, Carl Hughes, lost his life when a heavy 60kg metal bar fell on his neck, causing suffocation during a workout at his home gym in Rhos-on-Sea, Wales.
Reports from the UK indicate that a concerned neighbor discovered Mr. Hughes’ lifeless body when she checked on him in his seaside town flat.
The neighbor became alarmed when he failed to retrieve his morning newspaper and found him under the weight bench.
On September 9, Carl was found in his bedroom lying on the weight bench with the barbell on his neck.
A subsequent medical examination revealed that his death resulted from asphyxia due to neck compression by the bar. Samples from his body have been sent for toxicology tests to ascertain the presence of any substances.
