Indian fugitive Nirav Modi now in private London prison

Nirav Modi, the Indian fugitive facing fraud and money laundering charges, has been transferred from a crowded UK prison to a privately-run facility in London.

The move occurred as he was scheduled to appear in court for legal costs amounting to £150,247, but the hearing was adjourned to November as he couldn’t be located for a videolink appearance.

Nirav was moved from HMP Wandsworth to HMP Thameside, a Category B men’s prison, which, like Wandsworth, faces overcrowding concerns.

HMP Thameside is London’s only private prison and is managed by Serco, capable of housing around 1,232 male prisoners.

Despite his extradition case being denied, further legal proceedings are pending.
