“Gaza’s Tragic Toll: UN Chief Decries Rising Child Casualties, Surpassing 10,000 Deaths”

Rising Child Casualties UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres sounded an alarm regarding the dire situation in the Gaza Strip and called for an immediate ceasefire, particularly due to the impact on children.

Urgent Plea for Humanitarian Ceasefire

Guterres stressed the urgent need for a humanitarian ceasefire and an expanded flow of humanitarian assistance into Gaza. He urged the parties involved and the international community to address the collective suffering and humanity’s moral responsibility in the face of this crisis.

Media Worker Deaths and Aid Appeal

The UN chief also expressed concern over the killing of media workers and launched a $1.2 billion humanitarian appeal to assist Palestinians in Gaza and parts of the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Aid Delivery Challenges: Rising Child Casualties

Aid deliveries into Gaza have faced logistical challenges and delays, impacting essential services such as healthcare. Guterres emphasized the critical need for fuel to power medical equipment.

Respect for International Humanitarian Law

Guterres emphasized that all parties involved in the conflict must adhere to international humanitarian law and condemned acts of terror perpetrated by Hamas.

UN Security Council Meeting

The UN Security Council convened to discuss the situation but faced difficulties in reaching a consensus on the phrasing of the ceasefire resolution, despite recognizing the urgent humanitarian need in Gaza.

Pressure to Reach Agreement

Diplomatic sources noted the pressure to reach an agreement on a cessation of hostilities or humanitarian truce to prevent further loss of life.
