Traffic Update: Reduced Speed Limit on Vital Dubai-Sharjah Route

In a recent move, Dubai authorities have decided to reduce the speed limit on a vital segment of Al Ittihad Road, specifically the stretch between Sharjah and Al Garhoud Bridge. Effective November 20, the speed limit will be lowered from 100kmph to 80kmph.

Coverage and Implementation

The revised speed limit is applicable along the entire stretch of Al Ittihad Road from the Sharjah-Dubai border to Al Garhoud Bridge. Updated traffic signs featuring red lines will mark the beginning of the speed reduction zone, while road radars will be calibrated to enforce the new maximum speed limit.

Daily Commute Impact: Traffic

This particular section of Al Ittihad Road witnesses heavy traffic daily, as thousands of motorists travel from Dubai to Sharjah. Commuters, such as Hamdan Firas, a Syrian expatriate, hope that the reduction in the speed limit will encourage more responsible driving, especially after the underpass following Abu Hail.

Addressing Safety Concerns

Residents have expressed concerns about aggressive driving on the sharp curve toward Garhoud Bridge, with some likening it to an “F1 track.” Abdul Hameed, a Somali expatriate, welcomes the decision, believing that the lower speed limit will mitigate the risk of accidents caused by high-speed driving.

Collaborative Decision-Making: Traffic

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Police collaborated on this decision following a recent study. The study took into account various factors, including the number of entrances/exits, proximity of intersections, traffic accident patterns, and recent developments in the area.

Guided by Speed Management Manual

The RTA, in partnership with Dubai Police, relies on a speed management manual to assess and adjust speed limits on major roads in Dubai. This proactive approach aims to enhance road safety and improve overall traffic flow in the city.
