Sharjah Shows Solidarity with Gaza by Prohibiting New Year’s Eve Fireworks and Celebrations

The Sharjah Police have taken a stand by prohibiting all New Year’s Eve celebrations and fireworks displays as a symbolic expression of solidarity with Gaza. The Israel-Hamas conflict, claiming over 20,000 lives, has prompted this move. The police, via a Facebook announcement, have called for cooperation from both institutions and individuals, cautioning about legal repercussions for any violations without specifying the penalties.

Cancellation of Traditional Festivities

Traditionally, Sharjah welcomes the new year with a dazzling fireworks display over Al Majaz Waterfront. However, this year’s festivities have been canceled as a demonstration of support for Gaza. Numerous events, such as the Tanweer Sacred Music Festival in Mleiha, and the participation of the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) and the Emirates Publishers Association (EPA) in the Frankfurt International Book Fair, have been postponed or withdrawn due to the prevailing situation.

Widespread Impact on Events: Sharjah

The ripple effect extends to Spartan Arabia, which not only canceled a race in Khor Fakkan, Sharjah, but also severed ties with its parent company over controversial remarks made by its founder concerning the Gaza conflict.

UAE’s Advocacy for Ceasefire

The UAE has been a leading advocate for a Gaza ceasefire, and this stance recently found expression in a resolution adopted by the United Nations Security Council. The resolution, penned by the UAE, calls for concrete actions to increase humanitarian aid to Palestinians.

Dire Situation in Gaza

Gaza, under siege, is grappling with severe shortages of water, food, fuel, and medicine. The UN reports an estimated 1.9 million Gazans displaced, with 70% of casualties believed to be women and children. The death toll is expected to rise as Israel insists on “no peace” until Hamas is dismantled.
