UAE Study Reveals Increased Commute Duration and Record High Accident Rates

Commute Duration In the latest cycle of the ‘UAE Road Safety Monitor’ study, conducted by YouGov on behalf of Al Wathba Insurance and RoadSafetyUAE, significant shifts in road safety trends in the UAE have been unveiled.

Commute Challenges

Commuting to workplaces by road is proving to be more time-consuming, with 56% of respondents (a 4% increase from the previous cycle) reporting extended travel times.

Accident Surge: Commute Duration: Commute Duration

A staggering 32% of respondents admitted to being involved in a vehicle collision in the past six months, marking a 7% increase from the 2020 cycle and reaching an all-time high since the study’s initiation in 2015.

Positive Driving Behaviors Amid Challenges

Despite the challenges, positive indicators of responsible driving behaviors among motorists are emerging.

Improvements in Driving Behaviors

  • Instances of tailgating have decreased by 4%, reported by 58% of respondents.
  • Observations of distracted driving decreased by 9%, with 62% noting such behavior.
  • Abrupt lane changes without signaling reduced by 4%, reported by 61% of respondents.

Encouraging Responsible Driving

Thomas Edelmann, founder and managing director of RoadSafetyUAE, emphasized a recurring pattern in the study’s findings. While the government continues to enhance traffic infrastructure, road users’ behavior remains a persistent challenge. Edelmann stressed the need for motorists to remain vigilant on the roads and contribute to a safer driving environment.

Consistent Concerns and Appreciation

The study highlighted consistent sentiments, with 45% expressing concern about traffic becoming more dangerous and 63% noting an unchanged prevalence of speeding vehicles. Despite challenges, respondents showed appreciation for improved road infrastructure at 83%, with 71% expressing a record high enjoyment of driving on the roads—an 8% increase from the previous cycle.

Ongoing Monitoring: Commute Duration

The ‘UAE Road Safety Monitor’ study is scheduled to be repeated every six months, with the next cycle planned for the second half of the year.
