Indian hockey withdraws from the 2022 Commonwealth Games-News

[ad_1]

After the UK announced the latest travel rules, disputes broke out between the two countries

As the diplomatic dispute between the two countries over the Covid-19 quarantine rules escalated, India on Tuesday withdrew its hockey team from the 2022 British Commonwealth Games.

One day after England hockey announced its withdrawal from the men’s youth World Cup in the Indian city of Bhubaneswar next month, Indian hockey announced its withdrawal from the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham next year.

“England has issued guidelines for quarantine for 10 days [for] Indians arrive in England, even those who are fully vaccinated,” the Indian Hockey Association said in a statement. “We think these restrictions are biased against India and call them very unfortunate,” it added.

England Hockey announced on Monday that it had decided to “withdraw regretfully” from the upcoming tournament in India, and accused the country of imposing a 10-day mandatory quarantine on all British nationals.

After the UK announced its latest travel rules, disputes broke out between the two countries, which require travelers from multiple countries, including India, to self-quarantine upon arrival, even if they are fully vaccinated.

New Delhi called these rules “discriminatory” and announced a decision to “impose reciprocity” last week. Now, all British citizens arriving in India from the UK must quarantine at home for 10 days.

When the Indian Hockey Association announced its decision on Tuesday, it also called England the “most affected country in Europe” in connection with the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Local reports stated that the governments of the two countries are still working to resolve this issue and develop a mutually acceptable mechanism for travelers between the two countries.
