Dubai Gives Public First Close-Up Look at Electric Air Taxis Near Dubai Mall
Dubai has offered residents and visitors a thrilling glimpse into the future of urban transport with a public display of an electric air taxi near the Dubai Mall. The innovative eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) aircraft, developed by Joby Aviation in partnership with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), was on show until February 5, allowing people to see, touch, and learn about the city’s upcoming aerial ridesharing service.
A Hands-On Preview of Tomorrow’s Commute
The display served as a key public engagement initiative ahead of the service’s planned launch. Joby Aviation staff were on hand to explain the technology and answer questions. Unlike helicopters, the eVTOL aircraft uses multiple electric propellers for quiet, efficient vertical take-off, transitioning to horizontal flight. This design promises a smoother and quieter experience, crucial for urban integration.
“This is about letting people see it, touch it, and understand what’s coming,” said Lorcan Lynch, Joby Aviation’s Flight Operations Manager for the UAE, highlighting the importance of public familiarity before operational launch.
Building the Infrastructure for an Aerial Network
Dubai is actively constructing the infrastructure to support this new mode of transport. The plan includes four strategic vertiports at:
Dubai International Airport
Palm Jumeirah
Dubai Marina
Downtown Dubai
The Dubai International vertiport is reportedly nearing completion. The network aims to dramatically cut travel times; a successful 17-minute piloted test flight in November 2025 between Margham and Al Maktoum International Airport demonstrated a route that takes about 50 minutes by car.
Affordable Integration into Public Transport
Officials have emphasized that pricing will be aligned with public transport affordability, positioning air taxis as a practical everyday mobility option rather than a luxury service. This aligns with Dubai’s vision of a seamlessly integrated, multi-modal transport ecosystem.

Enthusiastic Public Reaction and Global Leadership
The display generated significant excitement, with visitors taking photos and sharing their experiences on social media. The initiative underscores Dubai’s commitment to transport innovation, working with international partners to adapt regulations for safe eVTOL integration by early 2026.
By showcasing this technology and engaging the community, Dubai is not just introducing a new service—it’s inviting residents to participate in shaping the future of urban mobility, positioning itself as a global leader in the next generation of sustainable city transport.
