Gilberto Amauri de Godoy Filho is widely regarded as one of the best volleyball players in history, and he was in awe after visiting the Dubai Expo 2020 with an official delegation from the southern Brazilian state of Paraná.

Jiba, 44, played for the Brazilian national team for the first time in 1995 at the age of 18 and won more than 30 top international championships including Olympic gold medals and three world championships in his international competitions. Jiba returned to Dubai as part of a delegation of more than 200 members from Paraná to the Expo 2020. What he saw at the Expo site during his short stay surprised him.

“I visited the 2020 World Expo and it was unbelievable,” said Jiba, who won the Most Valuable Award in the 2004 Olympic Games and the 2006 FIVB World Championships and other international competitions. “I am really touched.

“Actually, every time you come to Dubai, you are impressed. If you stay outside for a year and then come back to Dubai, you will be impressed. Every time they have something new.”

He continued: “We have a lot of work there, so I don’t have a lot of time to visit many pavilions, but Holland and Russia, wow. They are incredible. Holland, Russia, Brazil, Singapore… They are incredible. I want to come back with certainty.”

Jiba has been a frequent visitor in Dubai since he first visited Dubai with his family in 2007, but this visit was different from the previous one. This time, he hopes to strengthen the links between the UAE and Dubai through the 2020 World Expo.

“I am in Dubai for the Expo 2020, and there is an official delegation in my hometown of Paraná, Brazil,” he said. “It is one of the three states in southern Brazil. We came here with a delegation of more than 200 people to show how Paraná can help the UAE develop in terms of food and everything. Giba also visited the Dubai Sports Council, where he met with His Excellency Saeed Hareb, Secretary-General of the Dubai Sports Council and Nasser Aman Al Rahma, Assistant Secretary-General of the Council, and discussed initiatives and projects of mutual interest.

“I first came to Dubai a long time ago,” he said. “I came here for the New Year with my family in 2007 and I really like this city. After that, I returned here to play for Al Nasr (2013-2014). He continued: “The most important thing for me in Al Nasr is that I have made very good friends. They are actually not just friends, they are brothers. I am with Yunus Sharif and all these people. .

“Every time I come to Dubai, I spend time with them. I always talk to them when I’m at home. We call, we chat, we send text messages. So I don’t talk about friends, I call them my brothers. We just Like a family, this is the fifth time I have come here to visit my family in Dubai.”

Gibba is the leader of the golden age of Brazilian volleyball. Between 2002 and 2007, they won 11 major international competitions on trotting, including 5 world league championships and two world championships (2002, 2006) , Two World Cups (2003, 2007), World Champions Cup (2005) and Olympic gold medal (2004).

Overall, with the Brazilian national team, he won 8 South American Championships, 3 America’s Cup titles, 8 World League titles, 3 World Championships, 3 World Championships (2002, 2006, 2010), 1 medal Gold medal and 2 silver medals (2008 and 2012) in the Summer Olympics, the last two as captain.

The Chairman of the International Volleyball (FIVB) Athletes Committee Jiba hopes to return to Dubai in the near future to work with the children here and support volleyball talents.

“I want to open something here,” he said. “I want to help local talents, and I want to help everyone who comes to live in Dubai.

“In terms of sports, we are all a big family. If you do some sports at the school level, you will actually establish contact with his entire family, because no matter how busy most people are, they will make sure they go to watch their children play. And support them. Football, volleyball, basketball, anything will do.”
