When visiting Dubai for the first time, Argentine basketball legend Luis Scola was struck by its dazzling landmarks and stunning skyline, and planned to spend a vacation with his family soon. He is also exploring investment avenues and seems to be keen to open a basketball academy here.

Scola won the gold medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics, four years later he won the bronze medal in Beijing, and won two silver medals at the 2002 and 2019 World Cups. Scola participated in Dubai by Argentine football legend Javier Sane The charity dinner hosted by Tie is now the vice chairman of the Italian football giant Inter Milan.

In order to make the most of his first short trip to Dubai, Scola has been driving around the city, admiring its many landmarks, and visiting the Dubai Sports Commission, where he was met by the Commission’s Assistant Secretary-General Nasser Aman Al. Rahma’s interview.

“This is my first time in Dubai,” said Scola, 41, who visited the council accompanied by Naser Al Tamimi, CEO of UAE REP.

“I came because tonight there was a charity dinner organized by Fundacion PUPI, the charity foundation of Javier Zanetti. He is a good friend of mine. Of course, he is also a football legend in Argentina and Inter Milan. Character. He invited me to dinner, which is why I came here.

“I have always wanted to come to Dubai, but this time I only stayed here for a day and a half. I am already planning my next trip, possibly with my family.”

Scola is one of the few athletes in the history of sports to have participated in the five Olympics and the five World Championships. He added: “I have been here for a short time, but I am deeply impressed. I am. I have been talking to people about the history of this place. They told me that there was nothing here 20 years ago. I thought,’That’s impossible’.

“All these buildings, their quality, setting, style and design have left a deep impression on me. I think this is an incredible thing, honestly, I can’t wait to see it all at night—— All these buildings and lights must be so beautiful. So I am looking forward to tonight, and I look forward to coming back with my family soon.”

Scola is also seriously considering the idea of opening a basketball academy in Dubai, and said: “We have already talked a little bit. [opening an academy in Dubai] I think it will be great. I would be happy to talk more. I believe that Dubai is slowly becoming the center of all these activities and an ideal place to do all these things. So I am happy to do something here. I think it will be great. “

Scola has dual citizenship of Argentina and Spain. After rejoining the Italian professional basketball club Pallacanestro Varese as CEO in September this year, he is currently based in Italy. In the summer of 2020, he signed with Varese Club, this is his last season as a professional basketball player.

Scola’s career began in Argentina in 1995-96, when he was 15 years old, and three years later he went to Spain, where he spent nine years. He was selected to the Spanish club Tau Ceramica three times, signed with the Houston Rockets in 2007, and was selected to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. Subsequently, he played for the Phoenix Suns, Indiana Pacers, Toronto Raptors and Brooklyn Nets successively. He played in the NBA for 10 years and signed with the Chinese club Shanxi Yonglong in July 2017.

Despite all his travels and successes as a professional club player, the Olympic gold medal he won at the 2004 Athens Olympics is still his favorite memory.

“Olympic gold medals are hard to beat,” said Scola, who also won gold medals with Argentina in the 2008 FIBA Diamond Ball Championship and the two FIBA Americas Championships (2001 and 2011). “Every time you win an Olympic medal, this is probably the most important thing.

“For me, the World Championships are also very important because it looks like we won’t participate again, but we will be able to reach the finals again in 2019, 17 years later. So I think this is very, very satisfying.”
