What measures is being taken by the UAE to deal with the new variants

NCEMA has urged residents to vaccinate boosters…

The National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Agency (NCEMA) has issued a series of announcements regarding the new “Omicron” variant of the Covid-19 virus. The development of this epidemic story has been marked as “shocking” by the health authorities.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed concerns about certain characteristics of this variant, which may make it a more powerful threat. These include genetic mutations, indicating that it is a pathogen that spreads faster than previous variants, but “this is based on preliminary information that currently requires further research and investigation.” Keep in mind that this variant was only observed for the first time on November 12 this year.

What measures the UAE is taking to help fight this new strain

The core of the response strategy is to provide a third “booster” injection for everyone over 18 who received the second Pfizer or Sputnik V injection more than 6 months ago. NCEMA added: “It will also provide booster injections for patients receiving Sinopharm vaccine.”

The booster program will be launched through the UAE’s health authorities. The elderly and people with chronic diseases may be given priority.

NCEMA also stated that “a large percentage of children and students have not been vaccinated and are being vaccinated, while the percentage of not vaccinated due to medical reasons is very small.”

It is also reminded to continue to follow best-practice personal hygiene procedures-such as disinfecting hands and surfaces, wearing masks, and respecting social distancing.

Travel restrictions

Remember, this is a subtle and evolving frontier of existing global health issues. The restrictions on inbound and outbound are likely to change. However, as of 10 a.m. on November 29th, flights to and from the following destinations have been suspended:

South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Mozambique.

This morning, Etihad Airways confirmed on its website that it will suspend flights to and from Morocco.

Go to the UK

For those traveling during the Christmas period, it is important to note that the UK has also reintroduced PCR requirements on arrival. For more information on how to apply this requirement, Read our full story.
