Back in November, Gregory McMichael, Travis McMichael and William Bryan Jr. is convicted Murder of Ahmad Arbery in 2020. Today, they returned to the court and were sentenced.
Gregory McMichael received +20 years of life, and his son Travis McMichael received +20 years of life. Their neighbor, William Bryan Jr., received the possibility of parole.according to ABC News, 52-year-old Brian will be eligible for parole after serving at least 30 years in prison. Before reading the verdict, Judge Timothy Wormsley spoke of Ahmed’s five minutes before he was killed.
He asked the court to sit quietly for a minute to understand what these five minutes must have looked like when Ahmed escaped. Judge Wormsley said: “Ahmed Abery was hunted down and shot. He was killed because the people in the court held the law in their own hands.”
He continued: “When I thought about this, I thought about it from many different angles. I kept thinking back to the fear in the heart of the young man who ran across the coast of Satila.”
Before the sentence was pronounced, Ahmaud’s mother, father and sister spoke in court. They spoke emotionally about the heartbreak they faced after the murder and demanded the highest penalty for the murderer.
Ahmaud’s sister Jasmine described her brother to the court and said that his dark skin was “glistening in the sun” and added that he had “dense curly hair and a sporty figure.” She went on to say: “It is these qualities that make these people think Ahmed is a dangerous criminal and drew out their guns to chase him. To me, these qualities reflect a young man full of energy and vitality. He sees It looks like me and the one I love.”
Ahmaud’s mother Wanda Cooper-Jones also said: “This is not a wrong identity or a wrong fact. They chose to target my son because they didn’t want him to enter their community. They chose to be different from other people who visit their community frequently. Treat him the same way.”
