The World Future Energy Summit is the world’s leading future energy and sustainability business event, hosted by Masdar as part of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week and in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy and NEOM Energy and Water, at The second and penultimate day concludes at Abu Dhabi ADNEC assessing net zero and decarbonization strategies for the benefit of governments around the world. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) predicts that between now and 2050, global investment in the energy transition must increase by 30% over planned investment, reaching $131 trillion. The main forum of the World Future Energy Summit 2022 discussed the future of carbon capture, how the use of hydrogen will increase and play a central role in decarbonisation, supply electrification and the use of alternatives such as biofuels, waste-derived fuels and waste.
On day two of the World Future Energy Summit 2022, key regional government entities including Abu Dhabi Energy, NEOM, TAQA, Tadweer, ENEC and EWEC presented case studies and presentations. Regional and global leaders from Total, BP, NEXTracker, Sungrow, GHD, Ecoppia and Rolls-Royce discuss carbon capture and storage, hydrogen use, technology-enabled waste management, future mobility, solar and renewables energy.
Huda Masalmeh from Eedama moderated the Climate and Environment Forum and HE Eng delivered the first presentation. Yousef Al Ali, Assistant Under-Secretary for Electricity, Water and Future Energy Sector, Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, UAE. He said: “The UAE is the first country in the MENA region to announce a ‘Net Zero by 2050’ strategic initiative. To achieve our net zero emissions target, we plan to invest $163 billion to diversify our energy mix, Decarbonize hard-to-mitigate industries, build the infrastructure they need, and improve energy efficiency. We are driving clean electrification through solar and nuclear power, implementing transparent policies, improving energy efficiency, reducing carbon and methane emissions, and driving innovation to Commercialize hydrogen. Our strategy aims to free up capital flows to support the clean energy transition and ensure reliability and affordability.”
Tom Samson, CEO of Rolls-Royce SMR Ltd. said: “We are showing how our technology can enable decarbonisation processes, especially in energy-intensive industries. Each SMR (small modular reactors) to provide 470 MW of clean electricity, ideal for the production of low-carbon hydrogen, synthetic jet fuel, and energy-intensive users such as desalination and data centers. SMRs can also feed green electricity into the national grid, providing continuous, scalable, and energy-efficient cost-effective clean energy.”

Leading UAE developer Aldar Properties earlier pledged to reduce energy consumption by 20% across 80 of its properties, reducing carbon emissions by 80,000 tonnes a year and saving AED40 million (approximately US$11 million) a year.
George Berbari, CEO of DC Pro Engineering, welcomed the audience at the Water Forum, followed by a keynote speech titled “Building Industry Resilience through Clean Energy” by Gavin John Van Tonder, Executive Director of Water, NEOM Energy & Water.
