Died as a 23-year-old Lauren Smithfield Continuing to gain traction on social media, the world continues to demand justice as they seek to arrest those responsible for her death. Connecticut public officials are listening to and taking action from law enforcement, who they believe mishandled her and another deceased black woman’s case.according to NBC Connecticut, Bridgeport Mayor Joseph P. Ganim stepped in and suspended both detectives.
Detectives Kevin Cronin and Angel Llanos, who handled the cases of Lauren and Brenda Lee Rawls, have been formally suspended, the mayor of Canin announced Sunday night, reports show. In yesterday’s live broadcast, the mayor of Ganin offered his condolences to the families of the two women. During the broadcast, he said he was “very disappointed with the leadership of the Bridgeport Police Department and believes the actions taken so far are unacceptable.”
If you’re not familiar with the passing of Brenda, 53, she died on December 12, the same day as Lauren. Brenda’s family claims police are not investigating her death and are not taking the case seriously. Additionally, authorities did not notify Brenda and Lauren’s families of their deaths. The families of both women said they learned of the deaths through their landlord and neighbors.
Internal Affairs has stepped in to investigate Detectives Cronin and Lanos. The individuals also faced disciplinary action for lack of sensitivity to the public and for not following police policies. Lauren and Brenda’s deaths are still under investigation and have been reassigned to the police department. “The Bridgeport Police Department has high standards for the sensitivity of officers, especially in matters involving the death of a family member,” Mayor Ganim said. “It is an unacceptable failure to fail to comply with the policy.”
Brenda’s death is pending and Lauren’s death has been ruled an accident. Roommates, we’ll keep you posted as more information becomes available.
