The Dubai authorities have launched two new projects that use artificial intelligence (AI) to improve bus efficiency and reduce waiting times.
The Road and Traffic Administration (RTA) cooperated with Alibaba Cloud to try out the “urban brain” system to manage traffic in urban areas. The system analyzes big data received from nol cards, operating buses and taxis, and corporate command and control centers.
This data is then used to improve bus schedules and routes. The system is expected to increase bus ridership by 17% and reduce average waiting time by 10%.
The second project
The second project is the remote bus performance monitoring center in Al Quoz Bus Depot. It can instantly track and monitor the performance and efficiency of RTA’s new 516 Volvo buses equipped with a “telematics” system.
The system enhances the operation and maintenance process, including 47 types of alarms, covering mechanical aspects, fuel consumption per kilometer and the condition of safety equipment on board.
It helps to reduce fuel consumption by 5% and supports the planning of regular and preventive maintenance of buses.
Public transport ridership returns to pre-epidemic levels
RTA Director-General and Chairman of the Executive Board Mattar Mohammed Al Tayer stated that public transport passenger traffic has returned to around 70% of its pre-Covid-19 level.
He also said that recent initiatives have helped reduce the number of kilometers traveled by 18%; increase bus punctuality by 6%; and reduce carbon emissions by 34 metric tons.
