As the UAE and Japan celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations, Abu Dhabi Arts Festival 2022, in partnership with the Japanese Embassy and the Japan Foundation, presents a traveling exhibition “Change and Autonomy: Prints by Contemporary Japanese Artists” at The Galleria Al Abu Dhabi’s Maria Island, open from June 14th to July 7th.
Curated by Kyoji Takizawa of Tokyo’s Machida Graphic Art Museum, the exhibition showcases the work of 10 artists who experimented with printmaking and expanded the range of contemporary art expressions in the 1970s. Rather than focusing on the artists credited with shaping the history of contemporary Japanese printmaking, the exhibition showcases prints by painters who draw on contemporary art trends and seeks to re-evaluate the existing history of contemporary Japanese printmaking.
In addition to the internationally renowned Yayoi Kusama, this exhibition also showcases the works of Japanese artists such as Murai Masatari, Ono Toshinobu, Tian Yuan Yasuo, Nakanishi Natsuyuki, Nakasato Ren, Murakami Tomoji, Hikizaka Naoyoshi, Hori Guangxi, Ryuno Toko, etc. work.

“The exhibition showcases 42 prints by 10 leading Japanese contemporary painters, including the world-renowned Yayoi Kusama, and reflects the festival’s nearly two-year commitment to bringing the greatest international talent to Abu Dhabi audiences, promoting the nation’s between cross-cultural exchanges and building bridges of communication through art,” she added.
His Excellency Akio Isomata, Ambassador of Japan to the United Arab Emirates, pointed out that“I would like to sincerely thank the Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation for their enthusiasm and dedication in organizing this exhibition with us. I hope this exhibition will make new contributions to further promoting cultural exchanges between Japan and the UAE.”
The history of contemporary printmaking in Japan dates back to the 1950s, when more and more lithographers appeared. Printmaking soon became more prominent in the 1960s, as the opening of many print studios paved the way for artists who were not necessarily print experts to produce their own prints. The exhibition focuses on the artists who turned to printmaking in the 70s, using a variety of styles and pushing the printmaking world forward.
The theme is part of Abu Dhabi Festival 2022, Building the UAE Mindset: Creativity, Innovation and Joy, the innovative exhibition opened on Tuesday 14 June by His Excellency Alkhamis-Kanoo and His Excellency Ambassador Isomata, and can be viewed in the South Atrium, Level G, The Galleria Al Maryah Island.
