A documentary about counterculture icon and environmentalist Stewart Brand will be released in the US via Greenwich Entertainment.

The independent publisher bought the long-simmering “We Are Gods” from the director of the 2017 Bill Nye documentary “Bill Nye: The Man in Science.” David Alvarado and Jason Sussman. The documentary premieres on South by Southwest in 2021 and opens in New York and Los Angeles on August 12.

We Are As Gods delves into all aspects of Brand—the Zelig-esque creator of The Whole Earth Catalog, an influential member of Ken Kesey’s Happy Prankster, and an early activist in the modern environmental movement. Brand coined the term “personal computer” and influenced many Silicon Valley heavyweights, including Steve Jobs. Brand, now in his 80s, hopes to leave a legacy for the future by resurrecting extinct species to reshape ecosystems. But, as revealed in the film, his former allies thought he had gone too far.

Alvarado and Sussman said of the deal, “We are delighted to work with our Greenwich Entertainment partners to bring Stewart Brand’s extraordinary story to movie theaters and homes across the United States.” A terrific subject for a documentary – a performer whose grand project is responsible for changing humanity’s perception of Earth, time, and life itself now. Stewart has given us filmmakers unfettered access to his past three-plus years life, and archival material never seen before more than 50 years ago. The result is a cinematic experience of the astonishing life of this towering figure.”

Greenwich co-president Ed Ahrendts added: “David and Jason have created a very interesting original American biological document. For those who remember his “Global Catalog” of counterculture bibles, those inspired by him Inspired by ideas about the emerging world of computing and technology, and for those excited by his latest campaign for extinction, we know audiences will be fascinated by Stewart Brand’s long and strange journey through it.”

“We Are As Gods” was completed in March 2020 and was screened at SXSW in Austin before the pandemic hit, which was quickly canceled. Alvarado and Sussman for type About their experiences as the first filmmakers directly impacted by the COVID-19 crisis.
