Former Pakistani President (retired) Pervez Musharraf is hospitalized after deteriorating health.

The former leader, who ruled the country from 2001 to 2008, was taken to an American hospital in Dubai.

Rumors of Musharraf’s death flooded social media earlier this evening.

However, the former president’s family denied the reports, confirming that he was sick but not on a ventilator.

“He is not on a ventilator. He has been hospitalized for the past 3 weeks due to complications of his disease (amyloidosis),” they tweeted.

They added that the former president was “going through a difficult phase of not recovering and his organs were failing” and asked people to pray “that his daily life would be easier”.

The tweet came after several media reports said the former political leader died in Dubai on Friday.

Amyloidosis is a rare disorder that occurs when an abnormal protein called amyloid builds up in an organ and interferes with its normal function.

Ifzaal Siddique, overseas chairman of the All Pakistan Muslim League, also confirmed that although Musharraf was ill, he was “completely vigilant as usual”.

“Please don’t listen to fake news. Just pray for his health,” he said.
