In eastern Kentucky, a man shot at officers trying to execute a search warrant, killing three officers and wounding five others.
Three injured officers remain in hospital, state police said in a statement. One is in critical condition and two are in stable condition. One officer was treated and released, state police said, according to CBS.
The incident happened on Thursday night when four police officers attempted to issue a warrant for Lance Storz, 49, at his home on Main Street.
Police received complaints that Storz had assaulted and raped a woman. She then obtained an emergency protection order against Storz and summoned officers in Allen, a small town a few miles from Prestonsburg, local officials said.
As soon as they knocked on the door, Stozzi, who was waiting for them with loaded guns, opened fire on law enforcement officers without warning.
A local official described the scene as a “war zone”.
Immediately after, more police and agents from the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Authority’s London and Ashland offices were deployed to the scene.
After the attackers refused to surrender, the officer and Stotts got into a standoff. Family members were also involved in efforts to get him to surrender.
Stotts was later detained. He was charged with two counts of murder of a police officer, five counts of attempted murder of a police officer, one count of attempted murder and one count of assault on a service animal in the first degree, according to police, court records show.
Storz was arraigned Friday morning in Floyd County District Court, where Magistrate Eric Hall entered a not guilty plea on his behalf and set his bail at $10 million.
